connection problems

Yesterday I attempted to convert our site from fixednosidebar to the new php.fixed template following the instructions in the conversion documentation (under converting discontinued templates). Since I had performed a site-wide search & replace to update to the new template, and there were numerous problems with the result, I went ahead and replaced the entire root folder with my backup.

This morning I am getting the following message when I try to connect to the host: "An FTP error occurred- cannot make connection to host. Access Denied. The file may not exist of there could be a permission problem."

Did I inadvertently do something that would cause this permission problem? How do I reestablish the connection?

As of Sept. 12, 2006, secure FTP will be required for those individuals at
UNL who develop, maintain, or are responsible for websites on the UNL web
server, www.unl.edu. Secure FTP must be used to upload content onto the server.
Non-secure FTP will be disabled and no longer available for use. If you have
