CollegeNavigation in Firefox - Linux

Postby rin » Fri Apr 13, 2007 4:04 pm

I'm using Ubuntu 6.10 and Firefox 2.0.0.3 and I just noticed that I can't see any collegenavigation lists on any pages that use them. It shows up in the source and everything, but nothing shows on the page. It looks like the sIFR section is covering it up. I don't know if flash has trouble with Linux or what the problem is.

Sorry if this has been addressed before, I couldn't find anything.

Thanks!

I believe Ned Hummel ran into this issue as well. I believe it is because the flash version lagged behind so much --- with the latest version now available for Linux - I'm not sure how well it has been working.

Could you find out what version of the flash player you have...? I believe we can simply disable sifr for the Linux platform until macrodobia gets the issues worked out.

I have version 9.0.31.0 installed. Looks like Windows is up to 9.0.45.0...

It might not be a bad idea to disable sifr on linux even if it weren't for the collegenavigation, since it cuts off the bottoms of letters like p, g, and y.

I've noticed other sites with problems like this, but I believe if we want to have a really good website, it should be able to work on any platform.

Ok, I think the specific issue is whether or not the flash player has transparency support which allows the text below to show through.

The original test Ned added for Linux was to check if the Flash Player version was > 7 on Linux -- which worked.

Apparently the newer version for Linux still does not have full transparency support (for the flash wmode property).

I've tested on my machine and verified that with FF and Flash Player LNX 9.0.31.0 the sIFR is not replaced. I'd like to get some others to test with various platforms and flash player versions before I push this out.

Could some others test this page and note if sIFR works correctly for your flashplayer & platform..?

Brett worked on fixing this, and the fix is in CVS.
I've tried it out on my linux machines and things seem ok.

So this should get deployed fairly soon.

The fix for the sIFR headings has been pushed out to the template files --- this same issue causes problems for the new UNL Tour which will be released soon. :-(

Here's a couple links for more information regarding this problem - we're not the only ones:
