My dept wants to have a sign up for an email newsletter on their website. Would it be okay to use the style of the local search form to do this? Obviously changing the button and action.

IMO, the styles would be fine (though the magnifying glass would need swapped for a more appropriate image). However, the placement would need to go somewhere else (i.e., after the navigation). I would argue a user is expecting a search function above the navigation.

BTW, what department are you working with?

I agree, I put it on the page after the navigation and with a regular submit type button. I mostly just wanted to check that it was okay to put it in the navigation area. I should have worded the question better!

I would like to use an image as the submit button looks pretty clunky next to the pretty input box. Any ideas what would make sense?

I'm working with MATC (part of civil engineering)

Are where the magnifing glass and alot of the other mime type icons came from.

If you find another set of icons that are under a suitable license, creative commons, gpl... Let us know.

Thanks,
