Search feature

Postby jlantz2 » Mon Sep 27, 2004 3:27 pm

The Office of Undergraduate Studies new webpage is up. But whenever I do a search for something within the site from the main UNL page, the links to where they are located are not correct, bringing up the Not Found page, or the links are to the old webpages. For instance, "University Curriculum Committee" brings up info from the old site and a search for "Transfer Connection" misses a file, so the path is not correct.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? A search within the site works fine.

Thanks.

Google Search Results

Postby saltybeagle » Mon Sep 27, 2004 4:40 pm

Hey Jennifer...

The links from Google's search results pages should work themselves out of the system within a month or so.

Google's web crawler goes through all the websites and indexes the pages as it crawls, so those links are from the last time it crawled our website.
The next time it crawls the unl.edu server it should discover that those pages aren't there anymore and remove them from it's results pages.

So, it's really just a waiting game...

If there are important/high traffic pages, you can place a page that will redirect the user to the correct new page... but they should eventually work themselves out in time.
Hope that helps, and congratulations on the new site!

Only if they're no longer there

Postby saltybeagle » Tue Sep 28, 2004 9:00 am

I should add... the pages will get worked out of google only if they're no longer there (send the client to the File Not Found page).

If you want to redirect from a page that is still there, or is linked to from many external sources, here's some code that will redirect them:

Code: Select all
<html>
<head>
<script type="text/javascript">
<!--
location.replace("http://www.unl.edu/");
//-->
</script>
<noscript>
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0; URL=http://www.unl.edu/">
</noscript>
</head>
<body>
</body>
</html>

Just replace 'http://www.unl.edu/' with the correct URL.
