Keep layout in responsive template?

I've created a page where I use a 2 col layout, so grid6 first and grid6. I would like the items to stay where they're at because if the 2 columns stack in the phone view, the items in each column become out of order (since they go left to right and are differing heights, so rows don't look good.)

Is there a way to have the two cols stay side by side in the phone view instead of stacking? I've tried assigning a percentage width and fixed width at the 320 media call, but it doesn't work.
