Random Promo images

Postby cbourke3 » Mon Aug 17, 2009 8:44 am

Going to four columns has really freed up a lot of valuable real estate. For my site on some pages I'll take full advantage of all four columns. However, for most of the pages, three columns is preferred to keep the text from running on too long (as the "best practices" tip mentions on the documentation wiki). This, however leaves a problem of what to do with the third column.

The documentation wiki (http://www1.unl.edu/wdn/wiki/Random_Promo_Images) doesn't seem to have been updated for the new 2009 templates. Is it the exact same way?

Second, I don't have a repository of promotional images to pool from. Is there an existing repository of approved images?

Update...

Postby cbourke3 » Tue Aug 18, 2009 10:00 pm

The documentation referred to above is incorrect. There is no method XMLrandomPromo. There is, however, a newRandomPromo that does seem to work, sort of...

I can get the random promo to work (see https://gamesq.unl.edu/GAMES/newTemplate.jsp - lower right corner between the Pre and Post text). However, the javascript code is using the old template practice of using a div/a/img element instead of assigning a class to the img element itself.

Further, its unconditionally setting an "image_small_short" class to the div element (see global_functions.js). I want to include any image, as the documentation says I should, including "image_small_tall" images. Fine, so I go to hack the javascript itself, but it doesn't seem like any changes I make to the script are taking any affect. I've searched all js source files to see if there is anything that is overriding it, but I can't find anything. Any help here?

There is an implementation of the random promo in sharedcode/sharedColumn.html and sharedcode/leftRandomPromo.js that come with the templates.

For an example, I have it working on: http://www.unl.edu/finearts/.

That is a different random promo. The one referred to in the documentation wiki actually grab and parses an XML file and is more general: it seems to support random promo "text", "image" and "flash" elements.
