Minutes from the October 10th, 2006 meeting in the union.

RECORDING: http://www.unl.edu/webdevnet/downloads/wdn_20061010.mp3 16Mb

Covered:
Web Report to the Chancellor: Chancellor Perlman has requested a report of web site transitions. This report will be compiled and sent to the chancellor containing the unit name, and projected completion date. The coding group will be tasked with building a web form which will collect this information from web developers across campus.

Template Integration with other tools:
Peoplefinder - Brett demonstrated how to integrate Peoplefinder results into the content area of the page to prevent email addresses from being harvested.
UNL Calendar - Examples of pulling upcoming events, and small month widgets for display on your websites using the templates.
Examples here - http://ucommbieber.unl.edu/workspace/UNLTemplates/

Comments Link: Discussion of what needs to be done with the comment collection system to direct web-related comments to the correct web developers. The coding group will be asked to develop the comment system to allow WDN members to register their sites to recieve the comments related to their sites.

Code Compliance & Validation: Validation is important, and gets your website closer to accessibility standards.

Importance of No Overrides: Aaron Coleman discussed why it is important to not override the default templates for validation reasons, and how to contribute back changes you need.

Headers and MIME Types: Ned Hummel discussed the addition of MIME type classes for linking to documents. http://ucommdev.unl.edu/webdev/wiki/ind ... type_Links
We also discussed CSS changes to more correctly style semantic headers h1-h6. These changes will be distributed shortly.

Please note anything I've missed.

The CSS chanages discussed in the meeting regarding h1-h6 changes, as well as MIME-Type additions will be pushed out and available October 12th.

Here is a sample test page for reference: http://euler.unl.edu/test.shtml

Thanks to Ned Hummel for working out these issues, and his contributions to the WDN.

Brett - before you push things you you will want to update things from the cvs. There was a small fix for sec_main.

I loved the Calendar and Peoplefinder widgets! These will solve many problems we didn't know how to get around. Also the MIME types will be very useful.

Two quick things: Brett, the calendar widget for months doesn't seem to work under Internet Explorer. And under the MIME types, is there an icon for links to external websites? I didn't see one that looked appropriate.

Thanks,

There is something, it's just not under mime-types
the class is called external.

Maybe we should put that on the wiki some where.

Ahh... I used the same javascript variable for my two requests - the month widget, and the upcoming event list, changing one to a unique variable fixes this. Thanks for the note!

You should be able to use class="external" for external links. The WDN home page has a few examples where this is used: http://www.unl.edu/webdevnet/

Does IE not understand the MIME-type classes/images, or is my IE just special? I get a gap where the image would be, but no image. (And the image shows up just fine in Firefox, of course.)

Example: http://www.unl.edu/gradstudies/gsa/events.shtml ... The "external" class works, but "mail-message-new" doesn't.

Yeah. My fault there. IE 6 doesn't like png as background images. We are fixing this now.

Erin,

We have a fix for things. Basically, IE is very stupid (and has a bug). If the link with the mimetype background image is automatically wrapped to the next line it goes away.

So, if you manually, add a
Code: Select all
br
or change the wording things will show up.

Examples can be seen
