Website usage statistics

Postby Erin Paseka » Wed Aug 17, 2005 3:37 pm

There's been talk of producing website usage stats at the "subsite" level... e.g., for the /gradstudies directory rather than all of frontier (as with Analog). What's the status of that effort?

well................. I have some stats running. still have some issues that need to be worked out, but.

Eventually the stats will end up on a different server, but I've been running them on my machine for a while.
I have log stats back to July (over 16GB of data).
I went ahead and ran /gradstudies/

If anyone would like me to run stats on their directory, let me know. It takes quite a while to parse through that much text - so I wouldn't expect them right away. I'll cover more in detail at the next web dev net meeting on September 13th.

404s

Postby Erin Paseka » Tue Feb 07, 2006 12:37 pm

The "Pages not found" section shows bad URLs that people have tried to use to access our site, resulting in 404 errors. We'd like to be more proactive and ask webmasters for link fixes, at least for a few with the most attempted hits, but with the referrer column empty (and no luck googling), we have no idea where these bad URLs are coming from. Any suggestions?

Hey Erin,

For now, if you look at the 404 stats page for all of www.unl.edu you can do a Find for /gradstudies/ and see the referrering url (if there is one).

I'll look into why the referrers aren't showing up on your directory report.

Stats for subdirectories now have all the additional details, referrer, search strings, etc etc.

(meaning, from now on they'll be added in... )

The exception - virtual hosts do not log the 'combined' format, they just log the standard details. So unless someone requests a change, we won't have the additional details for frontier virtual hosts.

Thanks for pointing that out Erin.
