Carousel with text over images

I am in the process of trying to create a carousel for my site, and I was wondering if there is anybody who knows how to add text over the images, similar to the UNL home page (http://www.unl.edu).

This is the default presentation of the current carousel:

Just make sure you have your text in the paragraph tag for each slide!

Has the carousel recently been changed (reverted?) to a simpler version? Maybe for compatibility/accessibility/efficiency reasons?

I was trying out the carousel on a beta version of a page recently and it was all sophisticated--rounded corners, numbered thumbnails, animated slide, pause button--but then yesterday I opened up my beta again and the carousel just had square corners, no animation, and dots instead of thumbnails. I thought I'd broken it on my end somehow but then I checked the WDN example page and it looks simplified there too.
