Footer "Contacting Us" not validating?

When I validate my site in Dreamweaver I get the following validation error for each "<br/>" in my footerContactInfo.html file.

"The tag: "br" has an XML style closing syntax for an empty element even though version: "HTML4" is not an XML tag language.[HTML 4.0]"

When I validate my site using the batch validator, I don't get any errors.

Should I be concerned about this? If so, is there a different way to break a line of text?

Christy, the Dreamweaver validator will validate your files on an individual basis and will make assumptions about the "DOCTYPE" of a file if its missing. That means that even though your footerContactInfo.html file is included in a normal XHTML 1.1 file it is individually validated as an HTML4 file. This is simply a limitation of the Dreamweaver software.

As you can tell from the official validator (W3C's) http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1 ... u%2Fart%2F correctly identifies the entire HTML (from the server-side-includes) as valid.
