Class schedule alias/redirect

Postby Erin Paseka » Mon Oct 10, 2011 5:28 pm

Suggestion: Create something like "schedule.unl.edu" as an alias/redirect that can always go to the public schedule of classes, wherever it may actually be.

The current URL is https://myred.nebraska.edu/psp/myred/NB ... TION=NEUNL, which is about as inelegant and unintuitive a URL as you can get, through no fault of the NU/NSCS people working on PeopleSoft portals for all the campuses. Part of the complication is that it's doing a dummy login to enable a public view of schedule data, so I expect the URL will change again (still not to anything pretty) when somebody's able to improve on the workaround, and I'm not sure they'll be able to redirect this one. Meanwhile there are still sites using the old, pre-PS http://unlsched.unl.edu/nusched/index.jsp, which now has a redirect.

If somebody created schedule.unl.edu and got the word out to us developers, we could all use that tidy little URL on our pages and when the schedule inevitably moves again we'd only need 1 person to update the location in 1 file.

A good suggestion, but not so easily handled. "Someone" could certainly reserve the name "schedule.unl.edu", but that would still require that someone to also have a server to issue the redirect to the long URL. Those resources cost money.

Right now, the best solution is to create a goURL like a few other people have done. The following "pretty" URLs all redirect to the public schedule of classes.

http://go.unl.edu/schedule
http://go.unl.edu/courseschedule
http://go.unl.edu/2gm

Thanks. http://go.unl.edu/schedule looks good to me.

Are those go URLs maintainable on the back end? I mean, when the actual long URL inevitably changes (no specific knowledge/timeline here, just thinking everything changes sooner or later) will somebody be able to update go.unl.edu/schedule to point to the new URL?

Whomever created the URL will have the ability to delete it and create it again, should they choose to do so. Otherwise, a UCOMM admin could certainly make the change.
