The next generation coding group is developing integrated tools used on the UNL Website, as well as the underlying CSS code.

The first discussion for this group is at the 2:00 PM April 11th Web Developer Network Meeting.

Please come if you have interest in participating in the development of backend systems to support UNL, college and office, and department and unit websites at UNL.

Well I hope everyone that attended has been looking around at the various solutions out there and can bring their recommendation to the table this Friday at 2:00.

As far as the Berkeley project goes, I got a response:

Hi Brett,

Good to hear from you and glad to know of your interest.

To answer your questions: Yes, we do plan to release the application as open source. At this stage, we are focusing on building the application, and rolling it out in stages that will gradually open the door to all major departments on campus to join the network. We know that during the roll-out and ramp up, we'll encounter various bugs and, I suspect, a few issues we have not anticipated.

At the stage where we feel like we have a stable application, that would seem to be the sensible time to make this available to other universities. And at that stage, I would anticipate that we would be actively seeking programming collaborations.

I'm hoping that we can begin releasing the application and interacting with other universities within the next 12 months. We're on the cusp of hiring a calendar editor-coordinator to add to the team, and if we are fortunate, that could shorten these 12 months.

Not the best news, but also not the worst.

Hey Jeff,
Thanks for your response. Since my last message, our project team has evaluated the calendaring projects out there and have decided that the Berkeley Calendar Network is the calendar system that would best suit our needs.
We plan on moving forward, using the recommendations developed by Allison Bloodworth, and our target deadline is end of summer 2006. Our team has also decided that our system would be built in PHP-MySQL, and would be developed as open source.
Given that our deadline doesn't coincide very well with your targeted release date, is there anything you could provide to us to make sure our developments could be successfully merged once your work is ready to be released?
I understand that opening up your ongiong development would put quite an extra burden on your team right now. But I would like to see any system developed using the Berkeley calendar schema successfully merged with your project once your work is ready to be fully released.
Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for keeping you out of the loop Todd.

Berkeley got back to us... no - they aren't ready to distribute their code at the present time. We DO have confirmation that we can use everything published online, their schema included to work on.

We have developed a questionnaire to be sent out to known event publishers, as well as e-news and posted on UNL Today. This questionnaire will gather input and give us some direction of which features require a higher priority to finish.

We've outlined the basic system that will be built and CIT has given us a CVS server to start working on.

To get CVS access - users need to send their private ssh key to Yoon Wong at CIT.
